Common Causes of Car Wrecks
Too often these wrecks are entirely avoidable and result from a driver’s choice not to obey the Rules of the Road and practice safe driving techniques, to include:- Failing to obey traffic signals (i.e., stop light, stop sign, yield sign)
- Failing to adjust their speed and following distance based on the traffic, road, and weather conditions
- Being distracted (to include using a cell phone or GPS or anything that diverts attention away from them concentrating on driving)
- Driving while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs (to include various prescription medications and elicit drugs)
- Sending, receiving, or viewing text messages while driving
- Driving an automobile that is not properly maintained or unsafe to operate on a public highway
What To Do / Not To Do If You Have Been In a Car Wreck
If you are involved in an automobile wreck, it is advisable to take the following steps to protect your rights and preserve available evidence:- Contact 9-1-1 and notify them that you have been involved in a wreck.
- Get the name, address, and contact information for the driver of the other vehicle and all witnesses to the wreck.
- Do not move your vehicle or any debris until the police or other law enforcement officials have arrived and recorded its location and resulting damage.
- If injured, seek immediate medical attention and follow all instructions/restrictions provided by your treating physician.
- Take several pictures of the resulting damage to your automobile -- this is an important piece of evidence.
- Obtain a copy of the Alabama Uniform Traffic Crash Report from the police department or other law enforcement agency.
- Do not provide a recorded statement (assume all telephone conversations are being recorded) to an insurance adjuster or investigator.
- Do not sign any documents, to include a medical authorization (which likely would permit an insurance company to obtain ALL of your medical records from the day you were born).
- Do not attempt to resolve your claim until you have completed all of your medical treatment and been released by all of your treating physicians.
- Contact The Ryder Law Firm and we will evaluate your case and further advise as to the best course of action to take.
