Traumatic Brain Injuries

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of injury and death in the United States.  TBI is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or penetrating head injury that interferes with normal brain functions.  An estimated 1.4 million people sustain a TBI each year.  Individuals who are fortunate to survive TBI may face effects lasting a few days or disabilities that last the rest of their lives.  The resulting effects can include impaired thinking, movement, hearing, or vision and depression or changes in personality.  The leading causes of TBI include:

  • Slip and falls
  • Automobile wrecks
  • Blunt trauma (i.e.: sports-related activities)
