According to an article in Monday’s (9/10/12) edition of The Huntsville Times, there have been at least 14 traffic citations issued by Alabama state troopers since August 1st for violating Alabama’s ban on texting while driving. Three of these tickets were issued by the same state trooper in a 10 day period of time. The Alabama Department for Public Safety (state troopers) also reported that an unidentified number of warnings have also been given to drivers for texting while driving. The article goes on to cite statistics from the University of Alabama’s Center for Advanced Public Safety, which indicate that, in 2010, distracted driving accounted for 1,846 automobile wrecks in Alabama. These wrecks resulted in 7 deaths. Please realize that driving while using a cell phone delays your reaction time just as much as if you were legally intoxicated. Let’s all do our part to keep our highways safe — don’t text and drive.
